Work Strain and Your Body: Chiropractic Support for Kentwood's Working Adults

Kentwood is a working community. Within a few miles of our office, people spend their days in:

  • offices,

  • manufacturing facilities,

  • distribution centers,

  • schools, and

  • medical buildings.

Many of them also spend a good part of the day commuting on the East Beltline, M-6, and I-96.

When patients come to see me at The Wellness Way Grand Rapids in Kentwood, their job is often part of the story. It may not be the whole reason they hurt, but it is usually part of it.

Three Work Patterns I See Most Often

Long hours of sitting. Desk work, remote jobs, and driving routes keep the body in one position for hours. Over time, I commonly see:

  • tight hip flexors,

  • a stiff mid back, and

  • a head that drifts forward toward the screen.

That forward head position can also play a role in tension headaches. If headaches are part of your picture, you can read about how we approach headaches.

Repetitive lifting, reaching, and standing. Warehouse, manufacturing, trades, healthcare, and retail work often involve the same motions hundreds of times a shift, frequently on concrete floors. The low back, shoulders, knees, and feet absorb most of that load.

Long commutes and time behind the wheel. Driving combines sitting with constant small vibrations and a fixed leg position on the pedals. Many people notice stiffness in the low back or hips when they finally get out of the car.

Why Repetition Matters More Than One Big Moment

Most work strain does not come from one dramatic injury. It builds up slowly. Tissues adapt to the positions you spend the most time in. Eventually, the body starts compensating, and one area takes on more than its share of the load.

This is what I mean by physical stress. It is also why a single adjustment rarely changes the whole picture. The body needs better movement, and it also needs the load reduced.

What I Look at When Work Is Part of the Picture

I ask about your job in detail:

  • the tasks you do,

  • your hours,

  • the positions you hold,

  • the tools you use,

  • your footwear, and

  • how often you get to take a break.

From there, I evaluate how your spine and joints are moving and where your body is compensating.

Work strain often shows up outside the spine, in wrists, elbows, and shoulders. I completed post-graduate training in the Mally Method, so I can evaluate and adjust those joints as well. You can learn more about extremity adjusting on our service page.

If your main complaint is your lower back, I cover that in more detail in chiropractic care for back pain in Kentwood and Grand Rapids. Our condition page on back pain and stiffness at The Wellness Way Grand Rapids is also a good place to start.

Small Changes That Help During the Workday

These are general suggestions. What fits you depends on your job and what your exam shows.

  • Change position every 30 to 45 minutes, even if it is only for a minute

  • Keep your screen at eye level and your keyboard close to your body

  • When lifting, keep the load close and pivot with your feet instead of twisting

  • Wear supportive footwear, and use anti-fatigue mats on hard floors when possible

  • Take a short walk during lunch instead of staying seated

When to Start Somewhere Else

Chiropractic care is not always the right first step. Here is where I would start instead:

  • You were hurt on the job. Report it to your employer and follow their injury process first, which may include occupational health. We are a cash-based practice and do not bill insurance, so a work injury claim is usually better handled through that process.

  • You have neurological symptoms that are getting worse. This includes numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of grip strength. These need prompt evaluation, and I may refer you for imaging or to a specialist.

  • You had a fall or impact. Pain after a fall or impact at work should be evaluated medically.

  • You have chest pain. Chest pain, or pain in the jaw or arm that comes on with exertion, is a medical emergency. Call 911.

Care That Fits Around a Work Schedule

We offer both morning and afternoon appointments on different days of the week, which helps people fit care around a shift or workday. There are no long-term contracts, and you can see our current pricing before your first visit. If you would like to understand how the model works, I explain more about cash-based chiropractic in Grand Rapids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help with pain from sitting at a desk all day?

Chiropractic care may help reduce physical stress on the spine and support better movement for people who sit for long periods. I also look at your workstation and daily habits, since adjustments work best alongside changes in how you spend your day.

Should I see a chiropractor for a work injury?

If you were injured at work, report it to your employer first and follow their injury process. Once any required evaluation is complete, chiropractic care may be an option. We are cash-based and do not bill insurance.

Do you evaluate shoulder, elbow, and wrist strain from work?

Yes. I have post-graduate training in extremity adjusting, so I evaluate joints like the shoulder, elbow, and wrist, not just the spine. If something needs imaging or a specialist, I will refer you.
