Chiropractic Care for Back Pain in Kentwood and Grand Rapids

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people schedule a first visit at our office. Some are dealing with a flare-up that started after a weekend project. Others have lived with a stiff, achy lower back for years and are finally ready to find out what is going on. Many of them live or work in Kentwood, just minutes from our Kentwood chiropractic office on 29th Street SE. Many more come from across Grand Rapids.
In this post, I want to walk you through four things:
how I think about back pain,
what I look for during an evaluation,
when chiropractic care may be a reasonable option, and
when it is not the right fit.

Back Pain Is Rarely Just About the Spot That Hurts
Where you feel pain is where your body is getting your attention. It is not always where the problem started. A lower back that tightens up every afternoon may be reacting to several things:
hips that do not move well,
a desk setup that keeps you in one position for hours, or
a foot or knee issue that changes how your spine takes on load when you walk.
That is why I do not start with the adjustment. I start with the whole picture. If you want a deeper look at common contributors, I wrote a separate post on what causes lower back pain.
What I Evaluate at a Back Pain Visit
Before I recommend anything, I want to understand:
How and when your pain started, and what makes it better or worse
Your work, sleep, activity level, and daily routines
How your spine, hips, and pelvis move, and where movement is restricted
Your posture, and how you carry load when standing, sitting, and bending
Basic neurological screening, including reflexes, sensation, and strength
Whether an ankle, knee, hip, or shoulder may be contributing
If your pain travels into your leg, that changes the conversation. I explain more about that in my post on sciatica in Grand Rapids.
I also completed post-graduate training in extremity adjusting. Because of that, I check the joints outside the spine too. Sometimes the back is compensating for something happening further down the chain.
Physical, Chemical, and Emotional Stress
At The Wellness Way, we look at three types of stress: physical, chemical, and emotional.
With back pain, physical stress usually gets the most attention. That includes lifting, sitting, repetitive movement, and old injuries. However, the other two matter as well. Poor sleep, dietary habits that contribute to inflammation, and ongoing emotional stress can all influence how much tension your body holds and how well it recovers.
I do not assume every case involves all three. I ask about each one because they often overlap.
When Chiropractic Care May Be a Good Fit
Chiropractic care may be worth considering if your back pain:
Changes with movement, position, or activity
Comes with stiffness after sitting, driving, or sleeping
Started after a strain, lifting, or a change in routine
Keeps coming back even though nothing serious has been found
My goal is to reduce physical stress on the spine, support healthy movement, and help your body function the way it was designed to. Care is individualized. Some people need only a few visits, while others benefit from a longer plan. You can read more about how we approach back pain on our condition page.
If your back pain seems tied to your job, I also wrote about work strain and chiropractic support for Kentwood's working adults.
When Chiropractic Is Not the Right Fit
Some back pain needs medical attention first. I will refer you out, or recommend that you seek care right away, if you have:
Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs
Weakness in a leg or foot that is getting worse
Back pain along with fever, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer
Pain following a significant fall, car accident, or other trauma
Constant pain that does not change with position or rest
If either of the first two applies to you, go to an emergency department.
Being honest about where chiropractic fits is part of doing this job well. A chiropractor who never refers out is one of the red flags when choosing a chiropractor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor for back pain in Kentwood? No. In Michigan, you can see a chiropractor without a referral. If your history or exam suggests something outside my scope, I will refer you to the appropriate provider.
How many visits will I need for back pain?It depends on your history, exam findings, and how your body responds. I do not use long-term contracts. We reassess as we go and adjust the plan based on your progress.
Is chiropractic care a safe option for back pain? For many people with mechanical back pain, chiropractic care is a conservative option. Every new patient receives a thorough history and exam first, so I can screen for anything that needs medical care instead.
